The Salar of Uyuni, a giant sea of salt.....

To me one of the most wonderful and strange landscapes I have seen is the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. The size of this huge salt plane is more than 10.000 square kilometres (about the size of Lebanon or Jamaica) and the altitude is just over 3600 meters. The salt is white the sky is blue and you can see forever....

Nearing the Salar.

The Salar is completely flat.

Our driver shows us how to keep from falling asleep while driving through a salar....

Nice patterns

Great space....

Where are the edges......?

Then we are nearing an "island"  -   Incahuasi.
House of the Inca.

There is an easy trail over the island (but remember you are already at 3600 meters). It is really worth while to walk this trail. The cacti are beautiful. The views are breathtaking.

Water is being brought to the island. The only buildings are the offices and the souvenir shop.

Even in the middle of this salt sea these Alpacas stay alive on this island.

The island is a top of a volcano that was submerged in a huge lake. In a lot of places it is covered with corals.

Astonishing views, amazing cacti and coral beds.

Along the track a salty bay.

The cacti are fantastic.

Some of the cacti are extremely old!!
This one is around 900 years and
9 meters high.

Rhapsody in Blue.....

Before we left the Salar we passed the (well known) Salt Hotel.

Blocks of salt have been used to build the Salt Hotel in the Salar. (Our hostel in San Juan de Atacama was also build of salt blocs... even the beds were made of salt blocks.)
Really, it is looking a bit ramshackle.

Inside the salt hotel. The furniture is also salty...

Even the"chairs" are made of salt.

We drive on to a village at the border of the Salar......
